harvard yard Bostan MADo you really have better odds of getting into an Ivy League school than scoring a job during this great recession? Of course there is more to getting into Harvard, or a new job, than just a dice roll. The Dept of Labor says there are about 5 unemployed for every available job. When was the last time you stood in line for a job with 4 others? Many NoJobSurvivors find their job applications competing with sometimes hundreds of others. So what are the odds as artificial as the statistics are?

A blogger friend at pinkslipsthenewblack recently applied with 249 others for two open positions. Thats 0.8% probability of landing one of those. The application success rate of applications to Harvard for the class of 2014 was 6.9%.

Here is a snippet of a blog from our friends at pinkslipsarethenewblack.com

On the last interview I went to, the HR manager revealed to me that they received 250 applications for the two freelance positions, and that they selected 15 to interview and that two lucky candidates would be hired. That’s basically a .8 percent chance. He thought he was giving me a compliment when he told me I was one of 15 selected to interview. I thought to myself that my odds of getting into an elite Ivy League university, like Harvard, for example, are much higher. And they are, at 6.9 percent!  The going rate for competitive industries in New York is pretty low. I heard one job posting yielded 500 applications for one position! it’s ridiculous!

Maybe the ivy leagues is a better prospect after all!

Minimum Wage

Workers in BMW's auto plants in Germany make twice as much as US workers in BMW plants who make $15 an hour. Oh and by the way German workers get 35 days of vacation AND decent healthcare.

The tea party want to abolish the minimum wage. Did YOU VOTE?
