Victims of the recession trying to acquire state aid are facing a crazy quilt of disconnected programs and find being eligible and the size of the aid depend on geography or just chance. The NYTIMES recounts the heartache of navigating state's bureaucracies.
In addition there are variations in state aid across the nation. The NYTIMES researched 6 areas of aid,
Welfare,
Unemployment assistance,
Housing Assistance,
Food Stamps,
Health Insurance for Poor Adults and
Health Insurance for Poor Children.
And found large differences in numbers of those eligible receiving aid between states. For example 67% of the unemployed in New Jersey and Idaho receive unemployment benefits compared to 19% in South Dakota.

- 7.7 million "involuntary" partime workers,
