us_metro_unemployment_mapMarch 19, 2010 Unemployment rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 363 of the 372 metropolitan areas, lower in 7 areas, and unchanged in 2 areas, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.


  • Thirty Five areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent,
  • two areas registered rates below 5.0 percent,
  • 346 areas reported over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll unemployment,
  • 24 reported decreases,
  •  
  • 187 metropolitan areas reported jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, up from 107 areas a year earlier,
  • 35 areas with jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent, 15 were located in California and 6 were in Michigan.

El Centro, Calif., continued to record the highest unemployment rate, 27.3 percent. Merced, Calif., registered the next highest rate, 21.7 percent. Overall, 159 areas recorded unemployment rates above the U.S. figure of 10.6  percent (non seasonally adjusted), and 210 areas reported rates below it.

Workers in BMW's auto plants in Germany make twice as much as US workers in BMW plants who make $15 an hour. Oh and by the way German workers get 35 days of vacation AND decent healthcare.
