March 19, 2010 Unemployment rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 363 of the 372 metropolitan areas, lower in 7 areas, and unchanged in 2 areas, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
El Centro, Calif., continued to record the highest unemployment rate, 27.3 percent. Merced, Calif., registered the next highest rate, 21.7 percent. Overall, 159 areas recorded unemployment rates above the U.S. figure of 10.6 percent (non seasonally adjusted), and 210 areas reported rates below it.
