Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) is quite familiar with the 99er situation. Her constituents in Michigan and particularly in Detroit, see the impact of joblessness everyday. The state's unemployment rate is over 13% (although we know that government number is low at best), and in cities like Detroit and Flint the rate is higher than 25% and abandoned homes cover the landscape.
Now Stabenow has introduced a Tier 5 measure (Senate Bill S.3706) that would provide 20 extra weeks of unemployment benefits and extend a tax credit for businesses that hire workers who've been unemployed for 60 days or longer.
Read more about this bill and the struggle it will have in Congress with the GOP trying to get tax breaks for the rich. And read the press release from Senator Stabanow's office here.
Workers in BMW's auto plants in Germany make twice as much as US workers in BMW plants who make $15 an hour. Oh and by the way German workers get 35 days of vacation AND decent healthcare.
