Renewal of the 99-week benefits package has become a bargaining chip between congressional Republicans and Democrats trying to cut the deficit. President Barack Obama wants to extend the benefits, while beefing up job-training programs as part of his $447 billion jobs package that seems dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled House.
Over 3 million Americans collecting benefits would begin to lose them next year. The economy would take a $57 billion hit in the first three months of next year, translating into a 0.38 percent loss in gross domestic product.
