You are unemployed.  While you have figured out how to best spend your time while unemployed, your self-esteem is not where it used to be.  According to the State of California’s Employee Development Department on Aug. 19, 2011, 10.5 percent of San Diego residents, 12.4 percent of Californians, and 9.3 percent of Americans are unemployed.  You aren’t alone, but that doesn’t make you feel better.  How can you feel like you used to or feel simply okay when you aren’t gainfully employed?

When you’re spending your time wisely applying for your next job, your self-esteem may still take a hard hit.  Take it easy on yourself.  Your ego may have taken a blow but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better job out there for you.  Plus, people still like you.  Spend your lunches, evenings and weekends with people who care about you.  Visit your grandparents or surprise your kids with lunch at school.  Schedule a night to hang out with your old college buddies that you used to be too busy to see.

Focus on opportunities this time off presents.  Can you achieve a personal goal or build a skill you wouldn’t have had time to while working?  San Diego Continuing Education offers classes from woodshop to timesaving cooking to starting a home-based business.  If you want feelings of accomplishment and health, then train and complete a physical feat like hiking up the tallest mount in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney located in southern California.   Meetup.com has many free hiking groups for San Diego residents.
