Georgetown Canals, Washington, DC / This is my favorite walking spot in the DC area. It's just a few blocks off the main drag so you can take a block or so detour and grab a bite to eat, have a beer, visit a gallery, or shop. These canals have been in Georgetown since 1751. (Yes, for all you west-coasters, there is a history in the US prior to the Gold Rush!) Boats, usually with cargo like tobacco, moved on these canals pulled by mules and men would jump out and open the locks. It was part of a 184 mile journey. It's now preserved by the National Park Service.
