CoinsA stranger offers you $1000 cash or the new HDTV you are ogling at Best Buy. Which would you choose? If you picked the cash, then you better think twice before trading your hard-earned cash for that shiny new TV.

Save yourself a lot of money by pausing to question your buying decisions. If the purchase is still worth it to you, and if you have room in your budget, then go ahead and buy it. If not, then you should turn around and walk away before you change your mind.

This idea comes from a reader at fivecentnickel.com. Do you have any cash saving ideas?

Are you still buying water in plastic bottles?

us gi waterbottleNew evidence is is suggesting those plastic bottles may not be benign.

Scientists in Germany have found that PET plastics -- the kind used to make water bottles, among many other common products -- may also harbor hormone-disrupting chemicals that leach into the water. Read more about the dangers of plastic water bottles.

Save money, avoid the chemicals from plastic bottles by carrying your own water from home in a metal water bottle. It won't take long for the purchase of metal water bottle to pay for itself over and over. I personally like these US Canteen style waterbottles and holsters but there are lost of cheaper and stylish Metal Water Bottles available.

At pennies a bucket-full, you can wash your windows with white vinegar, water and newspapers. Plus, it's environmentally safe!

Recipe:

  • 1/4 white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 teaspoons of dish-soap

Mix the 3 ingredients in a large bowl or bucket. Take newspaper, about a page at a time and crumple it up like you'd use a paper towel. Dip the paper into the mix and wash your windows.

Alternative: pour the mix into a stray-bottle and soak the windows that way before wiping with the newspaper.  (OK, if you don't get a paper, there's probably a neighbor who does, or you may find a bag or two of the free local ones in your driveway.)

Why is newspaper better than using paper towels? NO LINT and no cost (recycling/reusing). Try it... you'll be thrilled with the results and the money still in your wallet.

Cute Cat Shaped Kitchen Timer It's the Little Things

A close friend and I just had birthdays -- we're 4 days apart. She and I usually spent a decent amount of money on gifts for each other, about $60 to $100. But, since we're both unemployed we decided to spend a minimum amount of money, ($10 each)... but search for the divine of quirkiness. My gift from her this year is the best. This cat kitchen timer is part Alfred Hitchcock, part Orson Welles, part Felix. How great is that.
