Feeding birds and other wildlife, like butterflies and squirrels, can be good for them, and for you.
For me, to hear birds churping and to see them flying around in my yard, creates beauty and calms my nerves. Even apartment dwellers can partake and there are cheap ways of doing it. Here are some ideas:
- Water! No waterfalls or ponds? Look into providing a birdbath or even small clay pot of water. Make sure to leave ample space around the water so that birds can see if any predators (like cats) are headed their way. I have a friend in California who has a small water container in a flower box in front of her apartment. Everyday she has huge scrubjays drinking out of it.
- Greenery! Plant a variety of shrubs and other vegetation in your yard, in flower boxes or in pots, especially the kind that provide berries, nuts and nectar. Confused as to what kinds are advantageous? Check with your local garden store.
- Nesting Materials! Got dryer lint? Items such as dog hair, twigs, string (cut in short pieces), and dryer lint are perfect for birds to make their nests. Word will get out that your yard/apt is the place for gathering nesting supplies and birds will be on their way to you.
- Flowers! Attract butterflies and hummingbirds with bright colors; ask you local garden store which ones are best.
- ENJOY!
