Feeding birds and other wildlife, like butterflies and squirrels, can be good for them, and for you.

For me, to hear birds churping and to see them flying around in my yard, creates beauty and calms my nerves. Even apartment dwellers can partake and there are cheap ways of doing it. Here are some ideas:

  • Water! No waterfalls or ponds? Look into providing a birdbath or even small clay pot of water.  Make sure to leave ample space around the water so that birds can see if any predators (like cats) are headed their way. I have a friend in California who has a small water container in a flower box in front of her apartment. Everyday she has huge scrubjays drinking out of it.
  • Greenery! Plant a variety of shrubs and other vegetation in your yard, in flower boxes or in pots, especially the kind that provide berries, nuts and nectar. Confused as to what kinds are advantageous? Check with your local garden store.
  • Nesting Materials! Got dryer lint? Items such as dog hair, twigs, string (cut in short pieces), and dryer lint are perfect for birds to make their nests. Word will get out that your yard/apt is the place for gathering nesting supplies and birds will be on their way to you.
  • Flowers! Attract butterflies and hummingbirds with bright colors; ask you local garden store which ones are best.
  • ENJOY!

Extend a Meal and Share It

Pasta DishAbout once every month or so (more often in winter), I make a huge meal. It's generally a meal that doesn't cost much like pasta, chili or potato soup or something. I make enough for me and a friend to eat, then I package the rest up and deliver it to homeless folks. The recipients are SO grateful -- sometimes it makes me cry.

If you choose to do this too, I recommend going to a local coffee/tea shop and having them donate some paper cups (for the individual food packages) and as much as those lids are an environmental nightmare, I get those too because it helps to keep the food warm when delivering it. I might be unemployed, but there are others who are worse off!

Got too many of those Bed, Bath and Bullshit coupons? Carry a couple around and when you're either in BBB or another store, ask the person next to you if you want it? Everytime I do this I'm shocked at how happy it makes people. SIMPLE, act of kindness.

Minimum Wage

Workers in BMW's auto plants in Germany make twice as much as US workers in BMW plants who make $15 an hour. Oh and by the way German workers get 35 days of vacation AND decent healthcare.

The tea party want to abolish the minimum wage. Did YOU VOTE?
